Picture this…
Bob: Hi, I’m Bob and I want to learn about how to get fit.
Alex: Oh hey, I’m Alex. That’s so cool you want to get fit.
Bob: Yeah, I’m interested in learning about it and probably ready to commit to whatever the process is.
Alex: Definitely, definitely.
… several seconds of silence …
Bob: So, how do I get fit?
Alex: Oh, man… there are lots of approaches to fitness. People like different things, people even define “fitness” differently.
Bob: I see. Uh… are there not some generally accepted things that constitute “fitness”? And, are there not some core principles that must be part of any fitness plan?
Alex: Dude, those are some great questions. Many fitness minds have pondered them for centuries. You clearly are a seeker of fitness truth. That’s so awesome.
…. Another silence. Bob looks bewildered and a bit frustrated…
Bob: Well, thanks, I guess. So, what is “fitness” and what are the core principles that work for anyone, anytime, anywhere… the things that are unchanging and universal … the foundation of any specific plan. If I understand those then I can work out the particulars from there and not waste my time on things that will not work.
Alex: Wow. You have such focus. It’s not that simple though. We are all unique. Further, I would not want to impose my own thoughts on you in any way. You as an individual have your own path to find for fitness, tailored just for you. [smiles broadly] Cool, huh?
Bob: Let’s change gears. How long have you been pursuing fitness?
Alex: Oh, 15 years.
Bob: And in that time you have not learned, found or discovered basic, core principles that work for everyone?
Alex: Bob, I don’t know everyone, right? How could I speak to what will work for them?
Bob: Okay, I’m going down one more path here. What do YOU DO? How did you get fit and how do you stay fit?
Alex: Uh, I’m not sure that what I do will work for you.
Bob: You know, I’ll be glad to weigh that out. So, I’m not asking for theories or philosophy. I am asking for YOUR HISTORY, YOUR PRACTICE. What do you do that results in fitness?

What would you say?
If you “lock up” or go into “Alex mode”… why is that?
Should that happen to us?
Is it really that hard/complex/vague?
